RHS trial of big perennial blue poppies (2010-2013)

The trial of big perennial blue poppies for the Award of Garden Merit (AGM) was concluded in June 2013. The following ten Meconopsis received AGMs:

'Bobby Masterton'      'P.C. Abildgaard'        'Mrs Jebb'                  'Keillour'          'Inverewe'
'Dalemain'                  'Marit'                         'Susan's Reward'      'Mop-head'       grandis 'Himal Sky'
      (M. gandis 'Himal Sky' is renamed from M. grandis ES104, the name with which this was entered into the trial).

The AGM for M. 'Slieve Donard' (first awarded in 1993) was also confirmed.

Pat Murphy, a member of the RHS assessment panel, was asked to give a final report of the trial to the meeting of The Meconopsis Group on 26 October 2013. Her detailed powerpoint presentation is given in pdf form here .

The assessment panel felt that a number of others were "near-misses" and should be presented for reassessment in the near future. A complete list of the cultivars submitted for the trial is below together with links to reports and photographs for the interim years 2010-2012.

Harlow Carr First report - summer 2010

An assessment committee met at the Trial beds on 19 June 2010. Ian Christie reported that the area where the Meconopsis are planted is a very open, exposed site on an undulating mound that appears to be an old rock garden. It is near the stream, with large trees on one side about 10 metres away, and surrounded, nearer to, with established shrubs. The ground has been cleared of an infestation of mare's tail. It is a clay-based soil, improved with compost. Once planted, a mulch of strulch (a fairly new mulch material made from wheat straw) was placed around the plants.

Second report - summer 2011

The RHS assessment committee met twice at the trial bed at Harlow Carr (17 May and 2 June). On the second occasion members also visited the duplicate collections at Holehird in Windermere and in Scotland. The season was an exceptionally early one in 2011 and the big blue poppies flowered everywhere up to a month earlier than usual. The committee also visited the other replicate plantings - at their gardens at Wisley and at Rosemoor. Not surprisingly, overall, the plants were doing better in the north of Britain than further south. It was felt that the trial at Harlow Carr has got off to a good start, with not many losses and many plants performing very well.

Third report - summer 2012

The RHS assessment committee met twice at the trial bed at Harlow Carr (30 May and 14 June). The sloping site, where plants in the George Sherriff group are located, has been improved by the addition of a perforated hose under the soil to counteract the drying effects of drainage and wind. Although there have been a few losses many of the plants are growing well, some exceptionally so. These include M. 'Susan's Reward', M. 'P.C. Abildgaard', M.'Inverewe', M. 'Mop-head', M. 'Keillour' and M. grandis ES104 (now named M. grandis 'Himal Sky'). Additional plants of all the species and cultivars were added to this large site in late summer to improve the visual aspect of the area.

We would like to express our gratitude to Elizabeth Balmforth, Curator at Harlow Carr Garden and to Alison Goding, Garden Manager, for hosting the trial. The photographs on this page were taken by Ian Christie. A set of pictures of the same range of plants in the "demonstration bed" at Holehird and taken by Pat Murphy and Alan Oatway is available here.
